Spotlight on Tian Berry

This month’s member spotlight is a feature on Tian Berry (she/her)! Tian has lived in Vermont her whole life and is based in Burlington. She is a student in the social work field and is currently an MSW intern, with aspirations to work in policy practice, advocating for underserved individuals and amplifying voices that are often overlooked.

Tell us a bit about your background before arriving in VT and what brought you to the state.

I’ve spent my whole life in VT and absolutely love it! I began my higher education at CCV and when COVID hit and everything went remote I found that I really liked online learning and continued my BS and now MSW through online programs. Also during COVID I created some unique and life-changing relationships with the Red Hot Chilly Dippers who all live in Burlington, and now I can’t imagine living somewhere I don’t get to see them every day!

How did you get into your career?

I began doing substance use prevention work in high school through the Burlington Partnership for a Healthy Community and really fell in love with advocacy.  Then when I had my own challenges with homelessness and mental health I became intrigued in social work and social policy, which has largely driven my education.  My professional opportunities have followed this same thread and I am currently an MSW intern working with transition-age youth involved with the juvenile justice system, DCF, having challenges at school or home, or any other challenge that warrants a little extra support from an adult who cares.

Why are you a member of the Vermont Professionals of Color Network?

Growing up I rarely saw POC represented in helping professions or really in general.  To this day, it is not uncommon to be the only POC in a large room of people and I think it’s really important that people accessing services see themselves being represented in the professionals they’re connecting with.  I really appreciate VPOC amplifying these professionals and bringing visibility to their work.

What aspects of life in VT do you find most fulfilling? What about your professional life here stands out to you?

I love the outdoors, and I think what’s unique about VT is how much versatility is in the state.  From Church Street in Burlington to hiking and skiing in the mountains to quaint little towns you can dilly dally through, there’s really something for everyone.  Something that stands out to me is the importance of having a network of professionals in your field and just how many shared connections you’ll find you have.

Tell us about the work you’re currently doing and what drives you in your profession!

I am currently and MSW intern, but I hope to find my way into policy practice so that I can help advocate for underserved individuals and amplify the voices that often get ignored.
