From the Bronx to Vermont: A Journey in Nonprofit Leadership
Alysia Straw’s journey from the Bronx, New York City, to Vermont proves her dedication to nonprofit work and community support. Before relocating, she spent years working for local nonprofits, with her last position in the Wall Street area focusing on contract coordination. Alysia’s path into the nonprofit sector began during her college years when she explored various shadowing opportunities. Initially aspiring to be a stockbroker, she discovered her true passion for nonprofit work, leading her to pursue a fulfilling career in this field.
As a proud member of the Vermont Professionals of Color Network, Alysia emphasizes the importance of representation. “It’s vital for those who come after us to see that people of color can succeed,” she shares. “Achieving our goals takes hard work and a supportive network.”
One of the aspects Alysia finds most rewarding about her life in Vermont is the warmth of the community. “People here are incredibly nice. I feel supported, and I know my neighbors,” she reflects, contrasting it with her experience in New York City, where such connections are rare.
Navigating Challenges and Opportunities
Alysia acknowledges the unique challenges faced by professionals of color in Vermont. “Sometimes, I feel I have to validate my experience simply because of stereotypes,” she explains. Fortunately, she works in an agency that values her education and experience. To overcome these challenges, she credits her “board of directors”—a group of senior leaders who have provided mentorship, assessed her strengths, and offered resources for professional growth.
In her current role as the Acting Director of Programs for the Southern Vermont Area Health Education Center (AHEC), Alysia is passionate about guiding middle and high school students toward healthcare careers. She also assists undergraduates in finding internships that align with their interests and strengths. “Healthcare is always growing, and there will always be a shortage of professionals,” she notes, highlighting the significant opportunities within the industry.
Mentorship and Community Support
Alysia believes that BIPOC professionals in leadership roles have a responsibility to mentor those coming up behind them. “We need to share our experiences to help them navigate their careers without making the same mistakes we did,” she advises.
For anyone interested in exploring healthcare careers, Alysia encourages reaching out to local area health education centers. “Whether you’re in southern or northern Vermont, I’m here to help,” she says, inviting the community to connect with her for guidance and resources.
Balancing Professional and Personal Life
Alysia understands the importance of self-care in maintaining a successful career. “To give 100% at work, I need to invest in myself at home,” she emphasizes. Her approach includes prioritizing rest, mental health, and family support.
Alysia Straw’s journey exemplifies resilience, dedication, and a commitment to uplifting others in her community. Whether you are seeking guidance in healthcare or looking to connect with a mentor, Alysia is ready to support you on your path to success.
