YOU BELONG HERE: THRIVING WHILE BIPOC IN VERMONT
by Alex Hilliard
Living as a BIPOC Vermonter presents unique challenges, shaped by a long history of exclusion. Even today, many people struggle to grasp the experience of being non-white and living here.
“I don’t have white privilege, I was poor as a kid!”
I was watching a video recently and cringed, multiple times.
I felt a pang of pain personally, for realizing yet again that they are not like us, and for the elder BIPOC who walked here before us. I grieve their efforts to facilitate the so-called ‘gradual’ change conservatives clamor about, knowing hardly anything has changed.
The culprit? A 02/15/23 Vermont Historical Society talk delivered by Jane Williamson, Director Emerita at Rokeby, on “Blacks in Vermont 1790-1870.”
She talked about the decline of Black families, chalking it up to economics. But we know it’s not that simple. A listener asked if she had ever found documentation of negative interactions between white and black populations. Williamson responded with the stories of Jeffrey Brace, (Memoir: The Blind African Slave), Poultney’s first Black resident, and Lucy Terry Prince, a Black woman who sued after being harassed by her Guilford neighbors. But she didn’t mention all the times someone wasn’t around to write about it.
Social attitudes, laws, and cultural norms during that time—and even now—made this a hard place for Black families to thrive. At times, BIPOC elders in Vermont hid their race, if they could, to avoid violence. I mean, no one knew Alexander Twilight, Vermont’s first Black politician, was non-white until decades after death! These stories, overlooked and omitted from history, are a reminder that our struggle for recognition and safety is far from over. You wouldn’t know, that’s a Vermont kid tradition.
Knowing that things have always been hard here for people who look like us, self-care and resilience are essential.
Recognize that your experience of being treated differently is real. Trust your instincts, and don’t second-guess yourself. Protecting your peace is tough, but it’s necessary. Pema Chödrön’s When Things Fall Apart might help.
Meditate when you can. Just 5–10 minutes of mindful breathing—with exhales longer than the inhale—can help reduce stress and increase emotional balance. Explore guided meditation videos on YouTube aligning with the mood you want to cultivate.
Affirm yourself. We all struggle with doubt and anxiety, but focusing on positive affirmations can shift your mindset. Whether it’s building confidence or seeking joy, listening to positive affirmation videos helps break mental ruts and reinforces personal growth.
Healing from trauma is also a key part of this journey. Many of us carry scars from childhood or systemic injustice, and while it’s not our fault, healing is our responsibility.
Building community provides much-needed support. Vermonters often respond with kindness once they get to know you. Engaging with your neighbors can create opportunities for connection and understanding. Someday, you might need your neighbor to give you a jump, or pull you out of a ditch.
Understand that you might be viewed as intimidating, simply because of how rare BIPOC people are in some parts of Vermont. It’s not you—it’s their unfamiliarity with people who don’t look like them. Once they get to know you, many will lighten up. If someone’s behavior is harmful or rooted in deeper biases, it’s okay to walk away.
Physical activity is key to resilience. Whether it’s walking, stretching, or other forms of movement, exercise boosts dopamine, helping you manage stress and improve mood regulation. It helps maintain mental and emotional balance in the face of daily challenges. Have you considered hiking? There’s a link to a table of accessible trails at the end.
Finally, set goals for yourself, no matter how small. Achieving even small tasks releases dopamine and reinforces positive habits. Break larger goals into smaller, manageable steps to keep yourself motivated and build momentum.
As you build momentum, you build resilience. As you build resilience, you’ll learn that the limitations of others are no reflection of your worthiness or value in your community.
You belong here, so please stay.
P.S. This Table of Hiking Trails doesn’t include the majority of trails, most lack accessibility. There may be accessible trails not shown here.
