Director of Public Works

JOIN OUR TEAM— The City of South Burlington is seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking leader to guide and advance the City’s Department of Public Works. Overseeing a diverse municipal portfolio of transportation networks, water systems, parks and natural areas, and public facilities for Vermont’s second-largest city, this individual will strategically guide departmental initiatives to reflect community needs, climate goals, and Council priorities.
WHAT YOU WILL DO: As the Director of Public Works, you will:
- Oversee all Public Works divisions and lead departmental staff to ensure effective operations, strategic planning, and cross-departmental collaboration across the City.
- Direct citywide capital projects and development reviews, ensuring that infrastructure, engineering, and construction activities comply with regulations and sustainability goals while meeting long‑term community needs.
- Manage budgeting, resource allocation, public communication, and interdepartmental coordination to support efficient services, transparent operations, and successful delivery of municipal projects.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Public Policy, or related field; ten years of progressively responsible experience in public works construction and maintenance; five years of progressively responsible experience in management and administration, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
SALARY RANGE: $135,000 to $150,000 annually
