Main Street Alliance

Southern Vermont Canvasser

Brattleboro, Rutland, Bennington

Date: May 12, 2022

About: Main Street Alliance works to elevate the voices of small business owners on public policy issues that impact their businesses, their employees, and the communities they serve. Our fast-growing network of small business owners works actively in local and national media and with policymakers at the city, state, and national levels.

We work to build power and represent Main Street small businesses. At the state level, we are focused on supporting policies that we believe help small businesses, improving upon ones that we think are inadequate, and stopping or modifying policies that we believe are damaging. Millions of dollars have made their way to Vermont to support Vermont’s small businesses during the pandemic and we know that there is still much to do, especially for the most impacted industries. As we move forward with this year’s legislative session, we will continue to work with our allies to make sure programs are designed with equity, effectiveness at their heart and reach all corners of our state.

In addition to our work organizing and lifting up the voices of Vermont’s small businesses,  we lead the Vermont Family and Medical Leave Insurance (VT FaMLI) Coalition – a collection of 25 organizations throughout Vermont that are working to support the passage of a robust, inclusive and equitable paid family and medical leave solution at the state or federal level. We will work together to facilitate engagements with our members, and work to ensure that the Main Street Alliance’s core priorities are what defines the 2022 election in Vermont.

Challenge: To achieve our goals, we need to increase our membership, deepen our relationships with leaders, provide policy training, organize effectively, and drive a strategic plan that will help us maximize power for Main Street. Currently, we have one staff member driving our program in the state.
