Employer's Approach to Diversity, Equity, & Belonging

Commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Statement
With a strong, long-standing tradition of empowering women and girls and challenging traditional gender roles, Vermont Works for Women continuously works to create spaces that are inclusive for all participants and staff.

We believe it is imperative to strive for a diverse staff and board who reflect the populations with whom we work, and who are open, informed and committed to advancing social and economic justice for women. This diversity includes race, socio-economic status, national and ethnic origin, gender expression, gender identity, sexual orientation, cultural background, religious belief and diverse abilities.

We strive to recognize systematic oppression and employment barriers experienced by women and other diverse gender identities. Through deep and honest introspection, we recognize that our work is informed and driven by historic and institutionalized forms of discrimination and marginalization of certain populations. Because of this history, we respect all backgrounds and experiences of our participants, staff and board.

Beyond our own organizational work, we recognize that promoting racial, gender, economic, and social equity is integral to creating a more just community. We advocate in support of other organizations and causes that contribute to advancing gender equity and diversity in productive and respectful ways.

Current Efforts to Foster Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
In addition to stating our commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), we are also taking proactive steps to integrate our commitment into our operations and working culture through deliberate actions in our newly released three year strategic plan. We are reviewing and updating our hiring and board recruitment practices. We regularly audit our curriculum and program materials to make sure that the materials both address diversity, equity and inclusion and are well designed for many audiences. We constantly design our outreach, registration and fee structures to ensure that our programs reach many audiences. We are committed to a process of continual improvement both in nurturing our organizational culture and in staff education. We set aside time for staff training and reflection on diversity, equity, and inclusion topics.
