We are seeking a dynamic early childhood leader who is an excellent communicator with a welcoming demeanor and strong organizational skills to work collaboratively in a self-managed team supporting all counties in Vermont.

The fast paced duties handled in this position require flexibility, strong computer skills, solid decision-making abilities, a positive attitude, and a willingness to adapt and change.

Some travel and flexibility in schedule required on occasion.

Job Summary:

Provide career advising support to the early childhood workforce; plan and coordinate Northern Lights professional development offerings; recruit, supervise and support Northern Lights instructors; participate in community and other activities to support the Northern Lights and the career needs of the early childhood workforce; serve as liaison between early childhood professionals and other CCV offices and outside agencies.

Essential Functions:

  • Assess local and regional professional development needs; develop and implement professional development opportunities in cooperation with early childhood and other community partners as well as with the CCV Academic Center staff and the Child Development Division.
  • Coordinate and supervise instructors of professional development training, including hiring, orientation, observation, support, evaluation, and problem-solving. Confer with instructors on matters related to course descriptions, objectives, methods, instructional materials and resources, adult instruction principles, evaluation feedback, attendance procedures, the BFIS Course Calendar and the Early Childhood Core Knowledge and Competencies.
  • Collaborate with partner organizations providing professional development opportunities, and serve as a BFIS sponsor for these organizations. Support, advise, and communicate with child care directors and other providers of professional development to ensure quality of data submitted into the BFIS Course Calendar and to support quality, diversity, and timing of offerings throughout the designated region.
  • Provide career advising support to early childhood workforce professionals within a designated area of the state. Support their professional development needs including navigating the career ladder, attaining credentials and certificates, meeting child care licensing requirements for staff qualifications, accessing a diverse array of professional development opportunities, etc. Coordinate referrals to other available services including recommending academic degree programs and financial supports where appropriate.
  • Offer 1:1 and small group training opportunities on career advising and professional development topics including the Individual Professional Development Plan, Prior Learning Assessment options, BFIS Quality and Credential Accounts, etc.
  • Assist early childhood professionals with understanding various opportunities for support, including financial aid options, non-degree grants, TEACH, Apprenticeship, etc.
  • Provide and/or support field observations and mentoring.
  • Coordinate collection and maintenance of data related to career advising and professional development opportunities; prepare related reports as required.
  • Work closely with Northern Lights Staff Team and CCV Academic Center staff to ensure early childhood professionals receive accurate and consistent information and recommendations.
  • Participate as Northern Lights representative on regional and/or statewide committees.
  • Maintain deep knowledge of statewide early childhood systems including STARS, TEACH, child care program licensing, Universal Prekindergarten and more; maintain deep knowledge and connection to local and regional early childhood programs, partners and systems.

Supervisory Responsibility: Functional and partial administrative supervision of Northern Lights instructors of professional development training

Supervision Received: Direction is received from Director of Northern Lights

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities) 

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or a related field plus three to five years of experience in early childhood systems or a related field.  Previous experience in adult instruction desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong planning, organizational, and administrative skills
  • Strong knowledge of and connection to the early childhood field / system
  • Strong writing, speaking, and problem-solving skills
  • Good general advising/counseling skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with instructors, early childhood professionals, and a wide variety of agencies, organizations, and individuals outside of the college

Physical Requirements: Duties performed causes light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties as a result of repetitive motion and/or long periods of standing or sitting. Duties require little physical effort in work with light to moderate (up to 25lbs) easy-to-handle materials.

Working Conditions: Job is performed in general office or comparable working area with many and frequent distractions such as noise and interruptions. Work schedule will include some evening and weekend hours, and some travel.
