Hunger Free Vermont is deeply committed to assessing all we do through the lenses of diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice, including our staff and board policies, our hiring and recruitment practices, and our programs’ design and implementation. We have been steadily making changes to these policies and practices over the past several years, and have significantly improved the diversity of our staff. In 2021, we contracted with Think Again, professional diversity and inclusion consultants who are working ongoingly with our board and staff to revamp our policies and procedures, and to guide us to center diversity and equity as we develop our next strategic plan (in process at this time).
In addition to these steps, Hunger Free Vermont’s Development team is transitioning from a traditional fundraising model to a more collaborative and community-centered model grounded in equity. We have started down this road by using some of our current development capacity to assist several under-resourced groups whose members are disproportionately facing hunger in identifying possible grant opportunities, and helping draft and submit applications for funding that goes directly to them. We have now made the decision to expand our Development team in the next twelve months to enable us to potentially extend this grant assistance to other under-resourced organizations.
