About the Job

The Vermont Department of Labor is looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, and innovative thinker, with a variety of skills, to coordinate the Department communications, marketing, engagement efforts. This individual should have basic knowledge of business communications, marketing, advertising, public relations and media relations, and the ability to work across multiple platforms. Graphic design skills are a plus.

The Department’s Communications and Outreach Coordinator will assist with the overall promotion of the Department as it relates to outreach and public awareness. This Coordinator will play a major role in the development and implementation of the Department’s strategic communications plan, in addition to assisting with photo and video capturing, managing various social media channels, press release drafting, website updating, and other communication and marketing efforts as identified. The coordinator will work out of the Commissioner’s Office and assisting all internal divisions, in various capacities, to effectively communicate and connect with their respective target audiences. This position requires someone equipped with a positive attitude, ability to adapt, a willingness to learn new skills and receive critical feedback as it pertains to developing material and copy, an interest in working with a team of people, and a desire to serve the public. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and constantly looking for new and innovative ways to further the Department of Labor’s mission through effective communication.

This is an office-based position, but eligible employees may have the opportunity to voluntarily participate in a hybrid remote schedule. In order to help with work/life balance, alternative work schedule requests will also be considered for this position (the standard state work schedule is 7:45am – 4:30pm, Monday through Friday). Remote and alternative work schedule eligibility and scheduling is determined on a case-by-case basis, based on the needs of the Department, and must be consistent with State and Department policies.

The hourly rate listed in this job posting reflects the first step in a 15-step pay plan. Step 1 is also the normal hiring rate established for most positions, and is the salary usually offered to applicants when they apply for positions in State Government. In rare circumstances a special exception can be approved for an applicant to be placed in a higher step at the time of hire. This is typically based on experience and rate of pay from prior employment. We are looking for someone with:
•    Experience in outreach activities and communications
•    Strong written and oral communication skills
•    Knowledge of social media platforms
•    Detail oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time
•    Basic knowledge of design platforms (Adobe, Canva, etc) and Microsoft Suite
