About the Job

The Office of Legislative Counsel seeks to hire an attorney to handle issues related to economic development, corporations, consumer protection, workforce development, and housing.  The attorney will provide legal research and analysis, legislative drafting, policy analysis, and other legal services to the Vermont General Assembly, and will testify frequently before legislative committees.  The Office of Legislative Counsel is a nonpartisan office that provides legal support to all members of the General Assembly, regardless of party or political affiliation.  Serving as a Legislative Counsel is challenging, interesting, and exciting.  You will be part of a highly professional and collegial team that is proud of, and enthusiastic about, the mission of the Office.

Required Education and Experience:

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school or successful completion of a recognized law office study program
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Vermont or, if licensed outside Vermont, admission to the Vermont Bar within a reasonable time
  • A minimum of 3-5 years professional legal experience

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in one or more of the subject areas listed above or in legislative drafting, or both, is preferred but not required
