About the Job

The Land Access Opportunity Board (LAOB) has launched a search for its leadership team. The Co-Directors will be responsible for supporting internal community building and network collaboration as well as planning and execution of plans made by the LAOB. This will involve collaboration with other state agencies and committees, as well as non-profits and other appropriate organizations to be identified within the state of Vermont.

Two separate positions are available:

LAOB Program Development Director
This role will serve as the backbone to the LAOB’s internal systems to design and implement programs, and responsibilities will include: program development, management, and evaluation; supporting partnerships; fiscal management; board management; and other tasks and special projects.

LAOB Advocacy & Engagement Director
This role will serve as the backbone to the LAOB’s internal and external communications, and responsibilities will include: advocacy, communications and engagement; board management; and other tasks and special projects.

Both positions will seek board participation and support organizations assisting individuals, families and collectives from traditionally marginalized and disadvantaged communities to navigate housing and land access.

The LAOB was created to address systemic barriers to housing and land access and uses an intersectional lens to operate as an equitable and inclusive instrumentality of the state. The LAOB was formed in May 2022 with the passage of Act 182 and is currently composed of representatives of 11 different agencies and organizations who directly represent historically marginalized communities in Vermont. Because the LAOB is newly formed, there are a number of administrative duties that we anticipate being delegated to staff and are looking for candidates that are flexible and creative.

Employer's Approach to Diversity, Equity, & Belonging

The Land Access and Opportunity Board (LAOB) was created under Section 22 of Act 182 of 2022 to engage with Vermont organizations working on housing equity and land access "to recommend new opportunities and improve access to woodlands, farmland, and land and home ownership for Vermonters from historically marginalized or disadvantaged communities who continue to face barriers to land and home ownership."

VHCB (the administrator of the LAOB program) has a mission focused on providing equitable access to housing and land in Vermont. We recognize our need to listen with humility, to encourage open hearts, and to support those whose justice has been deferred and denied for too long. Our internal Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee is focused on organizing professional and personal learning and training for staff to understand systemic racism and implicit biases, recognize and disrupt white supremacy, and prioritize equity in the work we do. Externally, as a funding organization we are working to fund more projects and partners that focus on meeting the needs of BIPOC Vermonters. Our Land Access and Opportunity Board engages with Vermont organizations working on housing equity and land access to recommend new opportunities and improve access to woodlands, farmland, and land and home ownership for Vermonters from historically marginalized or disadvantaged communities who continue to face barriers to land and home ownership. We recently coordinated the Vermont Racial Justice Housing Jam, a four-part series examining how racial inequities impact access to housing in Vermont. We are committed to continued learning and growing and to making VHCB a more welcoming and supportive work environment.
