Organization Description
Local Motion was founded in 1999 with a singular (and improbable) goal: to get people on bikes across the mouth of the Winooski River, where the Burlington Bike Path then came to an end. Since then, we have grown to become Vermont's statewide advocate for active transportation, vibrant communities, and safe streets. Our mission is simple: Making it safe, accessible, and fun for everyone to bike, walk, and roll in Vermont. We know there is no one solution that will work for every community. That's why our work ranges from on-the-ground advocacy and community organizing and project-specific technical assistance to workshops and classes for all ages and bike-friendly resources for businesses and communities. Our board is a diverse group of engaged citizens from a variety of backgrounds and professions. As Local Motion continues to grow into Vermont's walk-bike advocacy organization, we are making more connections and seeking additions to our active Board.
Organization's Approach to Diversity, Equity, Belonging, & Inclusion

In 2021, Local Motion staff developed a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion statement (found at that outlines current efforts as well as goals to further the work. Since that time, we've incorporated those goals into our current Strategic Plan and are ensuring that this is a lens we bring to all of what we do, through developing inclusive metrics.

Board Terms and Term Limits
Our directors are typically appointed to 3-year staggered terms, which ensures continuity for Local Motion.
Frequency & Duration of Board Meetings
The board meets quarterly (March, June, September, December) - currently the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 4-5:30 via Google Meet - although we are hoping for at least one in person meeting (likely in June). Board members are encouraged to participate in at least one committee (Finance, Leadership, Strategy, Legislative). Right now, Finance meets monthly for one hour, the others meet once between regular board meetings for an hour.
